for Division 1

Sunshine Coast Council Election 2020

What you can expect from Greens on Council

Local Government Initiatives

It shouldn’t be up to the community to fundraise and fight bad planning decisions in court when they should not have been made by the Council in the first place.

Greens on Council will:
  • Protect our lifestyle and biodiversity from the impacts of poor planning decisions and inappropriate development.
  • Transfer the power away from developers and back to the community by involving you directly in development decisions.
  • Support an Indigenous Rangers program to improve land and water management.
  • Strengthen recycling initiatives and phase out single-use plastic containers.

Public transport and public infrastructure should be available for the public to use on fair and reasonable terms, and not be continually charged for access to services and infrastructure we already own. It’s time we put the public back in to service.

Greens on council will:
  • Advocate for regular, reliable, affordable and accessible public transport between communities and business centres.
  • Modernise local laws to address changes in road usage and improve parking conditions.
  • Increase pedestrian, mobility scooter and cyclist safety.
  • Provide resources and support for community service providers including affordable housing, family violence support and disability services.

Everyone should be able to see where elected officials are spending public money, free of conflicting interests. Your Council had 208 secret meetings last term compared to Noosa’s 16. The trust in this Council has been destroyed, and it’s time to rebuild with a new, more open system of governance.

Greens on Council will:
  • Immediately commence live video streaming of Council meetings.
  • Hold far fewer closed Council meetings.
  • Create an anonymous whistle-blower program to report corruption.
  • Require conflicts of interest to be declared and made public prior to Council meetings.

This summer has shown us what lies ahead if we continue to ignore the science and allow short term economics to guide decisions. The cost of doing nothing has far outstripped the cost of action, and the time to act is now!

Greens on Council will:
  • Enact stronger climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.
  • Better prepare for more frequent and more intense bushfire and flooding events.
  • Improve the Coast’s capacity to care for injured, rare and threatened wildlife.
  • Declare a Climate Emergency.

Hi, I'm Raelene and I'm your candidate for Division 1 in the Sunshine Coast Council Election 2020, on the traditional lands of the Kubi Kubi and Jinibara.

I’m tired of governments who flout the system. As a lawyer, I believe in open and transparent democracy – a council that represents YOU!

I stand for open council meetings, transparent decision making and honest and accountable use of public funds.

As a mother of a 5 year old girl, family and lifestyle are important to me. We wanted to show our 5-year-old the beauty of living a simple life based on a lifestyle of healthy outdoor activities and living in harmony with our beautiful natural environment – what better place to live that life than right here on the Sunshine Coast.

But inappropriate development and lack of environmental protections are putting that lifestyle in jeopardy. My aim on Council will be to protect that lifestyle that we all love! If you want honest government and a representative who will work for YOU, vote Greens this election.

In a democracy, the role of an elected representative is to represent YOU. I believe this is being lost in our corrupted system and that we need to win back our democracy one seat at a time.

For many years I have been disillusioned with corrupt, dishonest politicians bringing our political institutions into disrepute via the misuse of public funds and failing to address the urgent needs of its citizens – us. They have failed us on climate change, affordable housing, aged care, First Nations Reconciliation, banking, the list goes on.

It is my goal to bring something different to the political arena. Honesty, integrity and expenditure of public funds that benefit the people.

I come from a working class background. I studied Law at the University of Queensland and I have worked as a lawyer advocating for people’s rights since 2005.

We moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2017 because we wanted to show our 5-year-old that there’s more to life than work, shop, sleep and battling traffic congestion. There’s the beauty of living a simple life based on a lifestyle of healthy outdoor activities and living in harmony with our beautiful natural environment.

I am passionate about:

  • Climate change – as your representative, I will propose a climate emergency
  • Gender equality and diversity – equal rights and equal opportunity
  • Aged care – this stems from personal experience as I cared for my mother who has dementia and I gave evidence of that experience at the Royal Commission in Aged Care
  • Political accountability and listening to the needs of the electorate
  • First Nations Reconciliation.

Will you join me?
