Sunshine Coast Council Election 2020

What you can expect from Greens on Council

Local Government Initiatives

It shouldn’t be up to the community to fundraise and fight bad planning decisions in court when they should not have been made by the Council in the first place.

Greens on Council will:
  • Protect our lifestyle and biodiversity from the impacts of poor planning decisions and inappropriate development.
  • Transfer the power away from developers and back to the community by involving you directly in development decisions.
  • Support an Indigenous Rangers program to improve land and water management.
  • Strengthen recycling initiatives and phase out single-use plastic containers.

Public transport and public infrastructure should be available for the public to use on fair and reasonable terms, and not be continually charged for access to services and infrastructure we already own. It’s time we put the public back in to service.

Greens on council will:
  • Advocate for regular, reliable, affordable and accessible public transport between communities and business centres.
  • Modernise local laws to address changes in road usage and improve parking conditions.
  • Increase pedestrian, mobility scooter and cyclist safety.
  • Provide resources and support for community service providers including affordable housing, family violence support and disability services.

Everyone should be able to see where elected officials are spending public money, free of conflicting interests. Your Council had 208 secret meetings last term compared to Noosa’s 16. The trust in this Council has been destroyed, and it’s time to rebuild with a new, more open system of governance.

Greens on Council will:
  • Immediately commence live video streaming of Council meetings.
  • Hold far fewer closed Council meetings.
  • Create an anonymous whistle-blower program to report corruption.
  • Require conflicts of interest to be declared and made public prior to Council meetings.

This summer has shown us what lies ahead if we continue to ignore the science and allow short term economics to guide decisions. The cost of doing nothing has far outstripped the cost of action, and the time to act is now!

Greens on Council will:
  • Enact stronger climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.
  • Better prepare for more frequent and more intense bushfire and flooding events.
  • Improve the Coast’s capacity to care for injured, rare and threatened wildlife.
  • Declare a Climate Emergency.

Hi, I'm Daniel and I'm your candidate for Division 9 in the Sunshine Coast Council Election 2020, on the traditional lands of the Kubi Kubi and Jinibara.

With plenty of opportunities for business and citizens on the horizon, we need to ensure councillors vote on issues as declared prior to their election, and in the best interests of the community they represent.

I’m a software developer, builder, entrepreneur and father.

Like many, I moved to the Sunshine Coast over a decade ago for the idyllic lifestyle it offers in contrast to Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Being clear about my values and integrity starts with having the transparency to declare political party interests up front; something that has been severely lacking in our Council to date.

I’m standing this election to bring transparency and trust back to our Council. With your support I will ensure local residents and businesses are presented with a reliable future plan from the council, and both existing and emerging industries are given every opportunity to capitalise on advances in all areas of innovation.

I live on the Sunshine Coast with my wife and two school aged children having moved here almost a decade ago for the same reasons as many other residents; the prospect of an unparalleled lifestyle in an idyllic climate with first class education and health care in easy reach.

Currently I have two roles; I help run a building company, and I work with new business startups to build their digital applications and better harness technology for growth and job creation. Supporting my customers affords me the opportunity to regularly engage with people and businesses delivering services to our community, to share their stories, and to hear their concerns.

I’m standing as your Greens representative In Division 9 to bring transparency back to our Council, and respect the town plan as it relates to sustainable development. Being clear about my values and integrity starts with having the transparency to declare political party interests up front; something that has been severely lacking in our Council to date.

As your councillor I will ensure the town plan is respected, and any new draft enhanced to protect our lifestyle, ensuring the Sunshine Coast retains the nuances that define who we are in contrast to Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

I will ensure businesses on the Coast are supported and have every opportunity for job creation. In tomorrow’s agile economy Council will need to foster growth in emerging industries, and capitalise on advances in health care, education, transport and public service delivery, all while remaining transparent and inclusive.

Economic development strategies should focused on ensuring that adequate support is available to newly established local businesses, that there are incentives for external companies to locate services on the Sunshine Coast, and residents who are willing to adopt more energy efficient forms of transport are supported, particularly when it comes to mass transit and public transport.

Our Council must be committed to the best solutions that address challenges to our quality of life and I intend to champion these matters, particularly when it comes to preparation for the coming hazards of climate change as it escalates to crisis levels.

As a rate payer, I expect to know where our budget is being expended, and I am sure you do too. For the last eight years we have witnessed millions of dollars in spending benefiting only a small handful of already wealthy developers, rather than providing long term community services. It is time that changed.

Together, we can do this.
